Day 19: Article Marketing

Quick update on the Profitmart dog training Google campaign. I spent $9.43 yesterday for 16 clicks. That got me an average position of 7.8 with the bulk of them (dog training) being at position 6.9. I had set my budget at $20 for the day. Since I didn’t hit the budget that may indicate that I should be looking at a similar cost per day. I’ll see what it runs up to today before I change anything. My average Click Through Rate is still at less than 1% but as long as Google doesn’t disable the ad I’m OK with that. It will just take longer to get the same number of clicks.

It’s time to get started on the second part of the two prong approach I mentioned on day  10. Here it is again to jog both our memories:

Prong II: Force my way into the natural search listings

  1. While the ad is running, do some research and write a 400 word article on dog obedience training. Put a link to my site at the bottom.
  2. Submit the article to article directories.
  3. Test the “get in the top 10 in 6 minutes” technique
  4. Social bookmark the hell out of my site.

Since then I’ve obtained a number of PLR articles on dog training that I have the rights to rewrite and use as I wish. That’s a great way to get a bunch of articles out there quickly.

I’ll just do a quick summary of article marketing for those of you that aren’t familiar with it.

There are dozens of sites on the internet where you can post articles. An “article” is a 400 to 600 word blurb about some specific topic. Typical articles might be ”10 ways to keep your dog from biting” or “How to write an Adwords ad”. These are not in depth information (400 words is pretty short) but could be a summary that provides a useful tidbit or idea.

There is a list of article marketing sites on my resource page at www.profitmuse.com/resources.html

Why post an article to one of these sites? There are several good reasons:

  • You include your signature and a link back to your site. This will generate traffic.
  • Article sites tend to have a high Google PageRank. This will benefit your site.
  • People can use your article as content on their sites as long as they keep your author info and links. This can bring you more traffic.
  • Articles will get picked up by the search engines and show up in the natural search results.

This technique is also known as “Bum Marketing”. Supposedly because you can do it with no money. There’s a great free book on the strategy at www.bummarketingmethod.com.

The “right” way to do this is to write one article a day for 30 days. This will ensure that you have a steady stream of traffic and when combined with adding content to your site is an excellent long term solution.

Back to writing the articles. Some of the PLR materials that I bought are conveniently broken into article form already. Unfortunately much of this material has been around for a while so people have already posted it to article sites. What I should really do is spend some time rewriting it or hire someone to write some articles. I’m going to try to keep the costs down so I’m going to give re-writing a shot.

What do you know! Talk about syncronicity. I was just sitting here trying to figure out how I was going to write 400 words on dog training and a buddy of mine called to see what I was up to. He has owned several dogs and he gave me a whole bunch of great material. I’m going to hide in my office for a while writing now …See you tomorrow.mike

You really don’t need to spend .50 a click…I was doing it for .15 to .20 a click, and getting on the 1st and 2nd page of google. Try it, I’ll bet you will have more success.

  2. DMR Says:

Then again, you are sending people to your profitmart site. I was sending people to profitmart through my affiliate link, but if I remember right, your blog is about making money without promoting your affiliate link. ;)

I tried .50 cents. I wasn’t making it onto the first page. I might have with longer tail search terms. It might have been less saturated when you tried it or perhaps you were doing something else that I didn’t try.

I’m not going for Profitmart sign ups with this experiment. The whole point is too see if their claims of “clickbank” riches are feasable.
