Day 12: Profitmart Google Ad (part 1)
Today I’m going to started on the Adwords campaign for “dog obedience training”.
Some of you may have tried Adwords before. If you haven’t you might be hesitant because of the potential cost. It’s true that if you’re careless you could run up a large advertising bill with few results. It’s pretty easy to control the costs and ramp up the campaign slowly based on success. It will cost some money but the results are usually worth it.
Let’s start with some ad writing guidelines:
- include your keyword as many times as possible in the ad but make it sound natural. In the title is best
- differentiate yourself from the competition
- your title is limited to 25 characters. You have two description lines of 35 characters each.
- include a call to action in the ad like “buy it now” or “sign up today”
- you can’t use words like “best” but you can work around it with terms like “number one” or “top”
- write something that triggers an emotional response in the viewer. something they can relate to
- make them curious. make an outrageous statement that requires them to click on the ad to see what you’re talking about
- stress the unique benefits of the product
- do something that stands out against the other ads. sometimes that means saying something doesn’t work or questioning it.
- use text from the landing page where possible to improve your quality score
I’m going to brainstorm some ideas to get started:

I’ve also looked at the ads that are running to get some ideas. I’m not going to directly copy any ads but I might use some of the ideas in different ways or for inspiration.
To be honest after looking at the ads for “dog obedience training” I can see that this is a mature market. There are a lot of well structured ads. “dog training” isn’t as bad but it’s also not as well targeted. This is going to be a challenge.
I’ve put together a video of my analysis of the current crop of google ads for these keywords.
OK - here’s a couple of ads I’m going to run with:
Dog Obedience Training
Put away that newspaper!
Dog Obedience Training that works
Dog-Training.co.nr
Dog Obedience Training
Don’t waste your time and money
Dog Obedience Training that works!
Dog-Training.co.nr
Dog Training is Painful
Unless you use this proven method
Dog Obedience Training that works!
Dog-Training.co.nr
It’s a good idea to have a few different ads so you can do some split testing. Once your ads start running you will be able to track their individual stats and optimize for better results.
I’m going to cover the actual setup of the ad in the next post.
