The Profitmart Experiment

The one thing I still need to do is fix up my main default Profitmart page. That’s the one that people will land on if they just go to the main site. At the end of the day I’m probably not going to send people directly to this page (workathomejobs4me = dog training?) but I’m going to do this anyway just so the site looks more complete.

There’s one small problem. I don’t know the first thing about dog training. I’ve never even owned a dog. I love dogs I’ve just never owned one. If I did I’d probably let it walk all over me. I could look for free articles on dog training but I want to write something that fits my site.

I’m going for the gusto here and trying to compete directly with the top dog training sites. I may crash and burn but I’ll give it a good shot first.

Time to do some research.

The first thing I’m going to do is figure out the best keywords to include on my homepage. I’m going to do this before I write anything and I’m going to use a fairly scientific method.

Here are the steps I’m using. This isn’t necessarily the best way but it’s how I’ve done it today.

• Go to google and search for “dog training”
• Copy the top 5 search results into a notepad. These sites are coming up tops for some reason. Let’s copy their keywords.
• Go to google’s free keyword tool and switch to “site related keywords”. Enter in the first site URL and do an analysis. This will show me keywords and search volumes based on the content in the page.
• Sort by search volume to find the best ones.
• Copy down the high search terms that fit my niche. (ie: dog training collars)
• Repeat this for at least two more of the URLs to pick up more keywords.
• Go to the wordtracker free keyword tool
• Enter in the keywords one at a time and write down the search numbers
• While doing this you will find other keywords that google didn’t list. For example the page I analyzed was using “dog behaviour” which had 58 searches. Wordtracker told me that “dog behavior” (without the “u”) had 349 searches. I think I’ll use that one instead!
• Filter this down to a short list of keywords that fit your niche and have a lot of searches.

Here’s the list I came up with:

The keyword “dog breeds” doesn’t really target my niche but I couldn’t resist it with 6647 searches a day. I’ll squeeze it in there somewhere.

Now why am I bothering to do this again?

I’m trying to do a little preemptive SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on the page . The ultimate goal here is show up on the first page of Google for my main keywords for free. On-page optimization is only half (or less) of the equation but it’s a pretty good place to start. I will look at building backlinks later.

That’s all I’m going to write for today. I’m going to go work on the text for the main screen now.
